The Cunning Idea Takes Form
The past two weekends have been productive as far as the garden and garden projects go. The Cunning Idea has started to really come together. We filled the path with mortar rubble from the fallen wall, which looks pretty good, I think. We opened up another seven beds, made some decisions about what we wanted to go in them, and got stuck in. Parsley from a pot made the jump to one of the beds, augmented with some seedlings. An impulse buy of spinach went in another. Herbs and some decorative plants filled out most of the rest. We've got plans for the two beds nearest the fence, but they haven't quite come to fruition yet.

Alas, not everything is going 100% to plan. We had two late frosts this week, which caught us off-guard and which have done a bit of mischief to the tomatoes. Four of them look like they may have weathered it adequately, the other three, well ... we won't do anything precipitate, they may still bounce back. The rest of the plants seem relatively unconcerned with a couple of sharp nights.

The demolition, too, has not been without its pitfalls. The state of repair of the deck varies from the place to place, ranging from 'not too bad' to 'thank heaven we didn't step there!' All of the screws used to hold down the planks are rusted through and through, so as each plank comes up, I was careful to remove the screws so we didn't have spiky death littering the garden. Not careful enough, though. As I knelt on one of the boards making up one of the beds, I felt a jab. A broken screw was still poking up and drew blood. Since I can't remember when I last had a tetanus shot, this was a little concerning.

That was on Saturday, so I went to the website for our local surgery and filled out the little form saying what had happened. Early Monday morning, I got a call from the surgery, and they booked me in for a tetanus injection later that morning. They took my temperature before allowing me in, and everyone was masked - I was wearing one my wife made. I was in and out in perhaps five minutes. I will hear no evil spoken of the NHS. Not that I would before, of course, but this was another example of the sterling service they provide.
